How Pheromones Work

All mammals use chemical signals to communicate with other members of their own species. These chemical signals have various meanings, and we are all familiar with the way that dogs and cats urinate to mark their territory. When they do this they leave a unique chemical cocktail that identifies who they are and what kind of message they are leaving.

After some incredible scientific work from France it is now possible to buy synthetic pheromone products that can be used to treat behaviour problems in cats and dogs.

For cats the main pheromone product we use is called Feliway. This is a synthetic version of F3, a pheromone that cats leave on furniture and objects in their home environment. In the wild this chemical is used to mark an area as safe and calming for the cat. Feliway is odourless and undetectable by people or other animals, but it can be used to reduce spray marking, clawing and aggression between cats in the home. It can also make cats more relaxed and less anxious.

Dog Appeasing Pheromone [DAP] is the pheromone used in the dog. The natural form of this pheromone is produced by lactating bitches. It is partly responsible for bonding between the mother and her pups, and it also makes them less anxious and more receptive to new things. In the wild, pups are exposed to DAP until they are several months old, but domestic puppies who are taken away from their mum at around 8 weeks of age, which is the best time, which means that they lose contact with DAP very suddenly and at an unnaturally young age. DAP is therefore very useful for helping puppies t make the transition to a new home. The calming effect persists into adulthood so DAP can be used to reduce travel stress, fear of loud noises or anxiety due to isolation in all ages of dogs.
