New Babies and Dogs
Dogs generally demand a lot of attention as it is, but the arrival of a new baby can worsen this situation. As the attention of the owner is more concentrated on the baby, the dog can become frustrated and start to show negative reactions towards the new arrival. Often, a dogs’ behaviour is restricted as some things it used to do, are now being discouraged and they can feel isolated because the owners no longer want them so close to their baby.
In preparation of a new baby’s arrival to the household, it is a good idea to train your dog to the noises and smells typical of a baby. Begin to train your dog by carrying around a small doll, so it has a chance to habituate to the process or actions you will follow once the baby is there. It may be useful to also train it to stop licking, jumping up, sitting on your lap, and to walk with or attached to a pushchair.
The CD, ‘Sounds soothing’ is a helpful tool for preparing the dog for the characteristic sounds and noises a baby will make, including crying and children playing.
