Fear of Fireworks in Dogs
Fireworks, thunderstorms and gunshots are the most common cause of sound phobias in dogs. They often involve consistent short, sharp noises and often occur unexpectedly, with regards to the dog. A dogs’ response includes hiding, cowering, pacing, panting, shaking and seeking of the owner. The more progressed the phobia becomes the greater the extent to which the dogs life is affected. In order to prevent this progression, methods to assist the alteration of this behaviour can be found through CD’s such as the ‘Sounds Scary’, use of a DAP, or for more severe cases, help can be sought through professional behaviour therapy counselling. To seek help and advice contact the APBC (Association of Pet Behaviour Counsellors www.apbc.org.uk)
